What is the ICEP?
The ICEP is an initiative created to give the opportunity to a local Wakatipu youth, aged between 13-16, the experience to attend a summer camp in the United States of America for 3 – 4 weeks
New Zealand based Wakatipu Youth Trust have teamed up with USA based Camp Carolina to develop a brand new initiative called the International Cultural Experience Program (ICEP)
What are the objectives of the program?
There are a number of objectives we want to achieve with this program and they include, but are not limited to:
- Developing essential life skills
- Building positive relationships
- Developing independent living skills
- Learning cultural diversity whilst teaching one’s own culture to others
- Engaging in new opportunities and challenging one’s self
- Expanding their knowledge of the environment around them and how they can become a positive member of their own community
- Developing an awareness of personal responsibility and their role in society
How did this program start?
WYT former youth worker Rhys Smith worked as a camp counsellor at Camp Carolina in 2013 and after seeing the positive life changing effects and essential life skills taught to the youth who attended, he was inspired to provide this to youth from NZ.
Rhys and camp director and owners Alfred Thompson and Mary Eccles worked close together to make this happen.
After a lot of fundraising and promotion throughout the community it became reality for the first participant, 13-year old and local WHS student Baxter Thomas in 2014. In 2015 we were able to send two youth to Camp Carolina; Hylton Briscoe and Richard Nock.
How can my child apply?
Applications for 2017 are now open! Please download, print and fill out the below Application Form and return this to Jacqui in person or via email to email@example.com.
Applications close 5pm on Friday, the 24th of March 2017.
(Please be aware we are working hard to provide an opportunity for a female youth at an all-Girls camp nearby Camp Carolina)
How will this program continue?
As a registered charity we rely heavily on community and business support to provide programs for our youth. We currently are looking for funding to provide the opportunity for 2 youth to attend Camp Carolina and we are also working hard to provide the same opportunity for a female at a local girls camp.
The needs include, return flights to USA, Insurance, and part of the fees for camp.
If you are keen to provide support please contact us on any of the details below to learn more or request a detailed report.
